Agritech ALERT: Bird Flu Watch

It is important that we inform the farm workers and others sectors involved in Agriculture about the latest the facts and strategies to counter the effects of Avian Flu Virus. H5N1 Avian Virus is feared to be very deadly affecting not only the bird species but also animals and human beings as well. Experts from different parts of the globe are working together to avert the pandemic scenario of Bird Flu Virus.

BIRD FLU ALERT

The Philippines, is free from the avian flu virus. This is the result of the concerted effort of what the DA and other satellite government agencies have been doing to protect the entry of bird flu virus into the country. I have stated earlier and reported to the President that we are looking at 20 sites, possible vulnerable sites in the country at this point because this is the season for migratory birds. We are looking at Candaba Swamp, Palawan, Zamboanga, including Zamboanga City, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, the Liguasan Marsh and South Cotabato, North Cotabato and Antique in Western Visayas. A total of 20 provinces and so far the taskforce we have created with the LGUs are doing their very best in seeing to it that everybody is informed on the problems that they have encountered once the Avian flu virus come into the country. Regulatory services have been put in place including local government's imposition of checkpoints in the movement of these animals, more specifically chicken and birds in those places, specially when the migratory birds land into these critical vulnerable areas. - Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban
